The Time Event Chart (TEC) and the Pattern Analysis Wheel (PAW) are chronological
records of an individual's or group's activities designed to store and display large
amounts of information in as little space as possible. This chronological record,
unique to each group under study, displays the pertinent activities associated with
the group (activities performed by the group, or in some way affecting the group)
in a variety of formats and displays.
The TEC is easy to prepare, understand, and use. By recording the chronology, it
is possible to analyze the group's activities, transitions, trends, and particularly,
operational patterns, that is, patterns in both time and activity. If desired, the
event may be color coded to indicate a particular event or type of event to aid
in pattern recognition. TECs are excellent briefing aids as well as very flexible
analytical tools.
The TEC is the technique used most frequently both as part of the group database
and in preparation of the analytical summary. The TEC is the best analytical tool
for pattern analysis, and hence the best way to predict future events by both type
and time.
It is important to note that within CrimeLink™, each of these views depicts
the same (or subsets of) data as each other. The information is simply rendered
in different formats depending on the needs of the analyst and what they may be
trying to determine.
CrimeLink™ can transpose its extensive library of significant dates onto
the timeline to show those event which coincide with these significant dates or
even filter the diagram to only display activities which coincide with specific
dates of interest.
